The “ round ” lock at Agde on the Midi Canal, junction with the river Hérault
The first photo, shows the two sets of lock gates (direction Béziers) both closed, this entry has to have two sets of gates so that it can be prevented from emptying the Midi Canal into the lock, and emptying the Hérault
into the Midi Canal.
The far exit to the Midi Canal via the river Hérault from above the weir allows boats to descend into the Midi Canal and proceed to Béziers, Narbonne & Carcassonne.
Boats can further descend and use the
exit to the right (open) to enter the river Hérault below the weir and thereby onwards to Grau d'Agde and the Mediterranean Sea.
The second image (courtesy of Google) shows more detail of the lock design.
